Overview
Intuit is seeking a Manager 2, AI Science, for a senior-level, hands-on leadership position to
spearhead the development of our next-generation Foundational Models. This is a unique role
that combines deep technical expertise with strategic team leadership. You will lead a
world-class team of AI Scientists and AI Engineers to build, train, and deploy large-scale models
that will power innovation and create new capabilities across Intuit's product ecosystem.
This role requires a leader who is passionate about staying at the cutting edge of AI and is
comfortable dedicating approximately 50% of their time to hands-on technical work, including
model architecture design, experimentation, and implementation.
Responsibilities
Lead a Specialized AI Team: Build, mentor, and inspire a high performing team of AI Scientists and AI Engineers. Foster a culture of deep scientific inquiry, rapid experimentation, and engineering excellence. Conduct performance reviews and guide career development for specialists in the AI field.
Drive Foundational Model Development: Guide the team's end-to end model development lifecycle, from data curation and pre-training to alignment and deployment. Set research priorities, manage complex training runs, and ensure the timely delivery of robust, state-of-the-art models.
Provide Hands-on Technical Leadership (50%): Dedicate half of your time to direct technical contribution. This includes designing novel LLM architectures, implementing training and fine-tuning pipelines, conducting code and model reviews, and leading experimental research to push the boundaries of model performance.
Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Partner closely with product managers, AI & Engineering teams, and leaders from various business units to understand their needs, define a strategic roadmap for foundational models, and facilitate their adoption across Intuit.
Manage Model Operational Excellence: Lead efforts to ensure the efficiency, scalability, and high availability of model training and inference services. Implement best practices for model evaluation, versioning, and ongoing performance monitoring.
Qualifications
Proven Management Experience: Significant experience in software and LLM development, with several years in a leadership role managing teams of AI Scientists, ML Engineers, or AI Researchers.
Deep LLM and ML Expertise: Required deep, theoretical, and applied knowledge in the following areas:
LLM Architectures: Expert understanding of Transformer-based architectures, Mixture-of-Experts (MoE), and other modern model designs.
Model Training & Alignment: Extensive hands-on experience with the entire model training lifecycle, including pre-training, Supervised Fine Tuning (SFT), and advanced reinforcement learning methods such as Direct Preference, Optimization (DPO), GRPO, and Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF).
Strong Hands-on Technical Background: Prior experience as a senior AI/ML practitioner is essential. High proficiency with Python and deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, JAX, TensorFlow) and experience with large-scale model training on cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP) is required.
Strategic Business Acumen: The ability to connect deep technical possibilities to a product vision, influence the future roadmap, and think strategically about how foundational models can unlock value for customers and stakeholders.
Inspirational Leadership Skills: A demonstrated track record of leading positive change, empowering and inspiring highly technical teams, and fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration.
Effective Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to articulate complex AI concepts, experimental results, and strategic plans to diverse audiences, from executive leadership to individual contributors.
Agile Research & Development Mindset: Experience managing the unique challenges of a research-to-production pipeline, applying agile principles to balance long-term research bets with near-term delivery goals.
