A Day in the Life

In this role, you will join a world class team of engineers within the Surgical Operating unit responsible for definition, integration, and validation of surgical robotic systems. Medtronic is looking for a Senior Systems Engineer to join the Systems Engineering Team within the Surgical Operating Unit. This role will be focused on definition, integration, and validation of software sub-systems that are part of larger surgical robotic systems. The successful candidate will work with cross functional teams to execute functional decompositions, develop product and sub-system requirements, and define system and subsystem architecture. They will lead or participate in trade-off studies, prototype evaluations, and clinical acceptability studies.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  • Provide systems engineering excellence and leadership through a product’s full development lifecycle, from commitment through to product launch.
  • Understand and translate stakeholder needs to requirements and total systems solutions that acknowledge technical and business constraints.
  • Analyse use cases, document product lifecycle, and define use conditions.
  • Oversee the regulated development processes and standards for risk management, usability, and safety to ensure system design and documentation meet relevant safety and regulatory standards globally.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to ideate, develop and test software subsystem concepts, and develop software subsystem architectures.
  • Understand, evaluate, and communicate system performance, desired behaviour, and usability in the context of clinical use.
  • Work with engineers to grasp the technological underpinnings of system architecture and detailed design.


Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, Systems Engineering, or other related degree
  • Background in software systems (define, design, code, test, release, maintain)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (English)
  • Experience in leading requirements management, risk management, and system architecture documentation
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and contribute to a cross functional team
  • Medical Devices (electro-mechanical and software running on Ubuntu OS)
  • Advanced knowledge in Systems Engineering principles and best practices
  • Electromagnetic tracking, magnetic localization, sensor fusion, or navigation systems
  • AI/deep learning methods paired with software development
  • Medical imaging integration
