Job Description
We are looking for a Director of Data to establish and lead Monto’s data function from the ground up.
This is a foundational, hands-on role responsible for shaping how data is structured, accessed, and leveraged across the organization. You will build on top of an existing, well-maintained data infrastructure (BigQuery pipelines managed by our engineering team), with a primary focus on turning data into a strategic asset that drives decision-making, operational excellence, and product innovation.
As the first data hire, you will define standards, own the data layer, and create the foundation for a scalable data practice. You will also play a key role in connecting modern data architecture with emerging AI capabilities, including context management, embeddings, and agent-based systems.
What You’ll Do:
- Own and develop Monto’s data layer, including data modeling, organization, and governance (SQL, dbt, BigQuery)
- Design, build, and automate dashboards and reporting frameworks to support business needs
- Serve as the central point of contact for data across the organization, managing and prioritizing data requests
- Identify discrepancies, resolve data quality issues, and drive a clean, reliable, and scalable data environment
- Translate data into actionable insights, proactively identifying opportunities across product, operations, and go-to-market teams
- Lead hypothesis-driven analysis to inform strategic decisions and future actions
- Enable self-service analytics by building systems accessible to both internal stakeholders and AI-driven processes
- Structure data to support automation, agent-based workflows, and emerging AI use cases
- Collaborate closely with engineering and AI/Agent Operations teams to ensure data effectively supports intelligent systems.
Requirements:
- 7+ years of experience in data analytics, data engineering, or related data roles
- Strong expertise in SQL and experience working with BigQuery
- Hands-on experience with dbt or similar data modeling tools
- Proven ability to work cross-functionally and translate data into business impact
- Strategic mindset with the ability to connect data work to company goals
- High level of ownership and independence, ideally as a first or early data hire
- Strong communication skills and ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
