Specialized Suture for Abdominal Wall Surgery

Voyager Medical Research is developing an abdominal wall suture aimed at preventing the incidence of postoperative ventral hernia by more than 50% and offering as much as five months of support.

In a study comparing the Voyager Surgical Suture (VSS) to the gold standard suture PDS-II, the VSS proved to be 74% stronger at eight weeks.

Moreover, while the PDS-II was no longer effective after eight weeks, the VSS continued to show high and stable tensile strength even at week 16.

The VSS dissolves and is safely evacuated from the body just over a year after implantation.

In addition, despite being a monofilament suture, the VSS requires only one double knot, compared to the four double knots required with most other monofilament sutures, such as the PDS-II.

This leads to quicker suturing without jeopardizing patient safety.

Fewer knots may also result in less inflammation and skin irritation.
