Better Pulse is developing new crops that can endure higher temperatures, low water requirements, and low fertilizer requirements, while having a high nutritional profile.The company will be utilizing CRISPR technology, for gene editing, to improve Cowpeas as a crop for food.

Currently, Cowpea cannot be mechanically harvested since it is a “spreading plant”.

Better Pulse have edited it so it is now a “terminating plant” ready for mechanical harvest.

In the next phase, the company will use CRISPR technology to improve its Amino Acid profile, reduce its anti-nutritional factors and improve its protein functionality.

Concurrently they will develop an extraction method to extract the protein fraction and formulate it into foods.

Thus, converting an ancient crop for the requirement of the future.
